My Dad is fond of sharing thoughts from great thinkers via text message. Some days I wake up to the words of Anton Chekov, others Abraham Lincoln. Today was the immortal Dr. Seuss, with the above quote.
It got me thinking - what is the nonsense in my life?
...Okay, so maybe that wasn't SUCH a hard thing to figure out. :P
I love photographing costumes - but sometimes, it's hard to explain exactly why. People passing by are naturally curious. Don't we know it's not Halloween?! Why dress up? Why photographs? Why sink the time and energy into creating fictional characters? Why this pursuit?
"We're artists," covers it pretty well, but this quote? This is even better. It's not JUST about art. It's about shaking things up from the mundane. Costumers do have normal lives - students, workers, parents. There are jobs, taxes, classes, morning coffee, the same things everyone has. We all worry about the economy. Unemployment. The environment. Politics. You know, the ROUTINE.
But oh, the trap of the normal! It's so EASY to get locked in, head down, barreling forward through the day. You might never even look up. You are iron, professional. Yup, nothing is going to stop you - it would take a serious effort to shake that force!Or maybe the Force...
THAT should get some attention!
There's a jolt as a bit of the universe twists sideways. Just for a second, your imagination gets a turn to play. Your brain starts buzzing, cells jumping. This is crazy, absurd, it isn't real!
Of course it isn't.
Still, isn't it a welcome break from
what can, frankly, be a pretty depressing world? Isn't it more fun to marvel at superheroes in Starbucks then worry that the NASDAQ went down/up? Wouldn't you rather hear THAT story? Why, it's
something to smile at! It's absurd!
The world can always use more
absurdity, more nonsense. So, a toast to those willing to spread it! Go forth, dressing
as Thor and Captain America, queens and aliens. Spread the
fantastic! Stetch the brain cells! Give reality a workout!
And me? I love shooting every single ridiculous, colorful second.
After all, nonsense is just what the good Dr. ordered!
So, how do YOU cause nonsense?
